What is a chronic traumatic brain injury?

This year over 1 million people in the US will get a head injury that has not returned to normal after 12 months. This is a chronic traumatic brain injury.

More people are left suffering from persistent chronic TBI symptoms than all the new cases of prostate, lung, colon, and breast cancer combined.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can range from mild (or concussion) to moderate to severe, and:

  • commonly occur from a fall, motor vehicle crash, or an assault

  • may lead to short- or long-term health problems

  • may affect brain development during childhood

  • may be missed in older adults
